Location: West Yorkshire
Salary: £50,000 - £60,000 DOE

Take the Lead on Complex Structural Steelwork Projects

Are you an experienced Structural Design Engineer ready to take ownership of challenging projects, share your technical expertise and help develop the next generation of design engineers?

An established structural steelwork specialist is looking for a Senior Structural Design Engineer to join its growing team in West Yorkshire. This is an opportunity to play a key role in delivering technically demanding projects, managing design requirements and working closely with clients and colleagues across multiple departments.

With a strong reputation for technical expertise and the capability to deliver complex structural steelwork, the business offers an opportunity to work on challenging projects where quality, precision and engineering knowledge matter.

If you have extensive structural steelwork design experience and are confident managing projects from a technical perspective, this could be your next career move.

The Role

As Senior Structural Design Engineer, you will take responsibility for structural steelwork design activities, ensuring projects meet the required technical standards, budgets and deadlines.

Working closely with the Head of Design, you will coordinate with clients, engineers, architects, subcontractors and internal departments to ensure design information is accurate, projects run smoothly and solutions meet the demands of each project.

You will also support the development of junior team members, contribute to continuous improvement and help maintain the high standards expected across the business.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing structural steelwork design activities across a range of projects.

  • Undertaking structural steel member design and steelwork connection design.

  • Applying relevant design codes, standards and engineering principles to deliver safe, practical and compliant solutions.

  • Using Tekla Structural Designer, Tekla Portal Designer and Masterseries design software.

  • Coordinating design information with clients, consulting engineers, architects and subcontractors.

  • Identifying and raising technical queries to resolve design issues and keep projects progressing.

  • Monitoring design budgets and ensuring work is delivered within agreed parameters.

  • Attending project and technical meetings, providing engineering input and updates as required.

  • Working in accordance with company quality assurance procedures.

  • Liaising with other departments to meet project requirements and delivery deadlines.

  • Supporting and mentoring graduate design engineers, sharing knowledge and encouraging professional development.

  • Building and maintaining strong client relationships to support successful project delivery and positive feedback.

  • Contributing to continuous improvement, technical best practice and the wider development of the design team.

What We're Looking For

This is a senior-level opportunity, so you will need substantial structural steelwork design experience, strong technical knowledge and the confidence to manage your own workload and project responsibilities.

You'll ideally bring:

  • A minimum of 10 years' experience in structural steelwork design.

  • A degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or a closely related discipline.

  • Experience working towards Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer status, ideally.

  • Strong knowledge of relevant structural design codes and standards.

  • Proven experience in structural steel member design and steelwork connection design.

  • Practical experience using Tekla Structural Designer, Tekla Portal Designer and Masterseries.

  • The ability to manage design work independently, prioritise workloads and work to project budgets.

  • Strong communication and coordination skills, with the ability to work effectively with clients and multidisciplinary project teams.

  • A proactive approach to resolving technical challenges and raising queries when required.

  • The confidence to support and develop graduate engineers while maintaining high technical standards.

Experience in temporary works design would be an advantage.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

  • Competitive salary: £50,000-£60,000, depending on experience.

  • Senior-level responsibility: Take ownership of design activities and contribute to project success.

  • Technically challenging work: Apply your expertise to complex structural steelwork projects.

  • Professional development: Support graduate engineers and continue developing your own professional standing.

  • Collaborative environment: Work closely with experienced colleagues across design, project delivery and other departments.

  • Opportunity to make an impact: Contribute ideas, improve processes and help shape the ongoing development of the design function.
