Senior Project Manager - Structural Steelwork
Location: London Projects
Take ownership of major structural steel projects, from the first programme review to the final handover.
When you're managing a structural steel installation, the details matter. Labour needs organising before mobilisation, cranes and trades need to be in the right place at the right time, and the site team needs a clear plan to work to. When challenges arise, you need to bring the right people together, make decisions and keep the project moving.
This role is for an experienced Project Manager who understands structural steelwork beyond the paperwork. You'll lead the project team, coordinate site and workshop operations, manage client relationships and take accountability for delivering projects safely, on programme and within budget.
What You'll Be Responsible For
Leading project delivery: Manage structural steel installation projects from planning and mobilisation through erection, quality control and final handover.
Planning ahead: Develop clear project programmes, lookahead schedules and visual plans using models and 2D drawing markups, ensuring the project and site teams understand priorities and deadlines.
Coordinating people and trades: Organise subcontractors, suppliers, labour, lifting operations and other trades well in advance to prevent delays and keep work fronts moving.
Managing client relationships: Lead site meetings, maintain regular communication with clients, engineers, designers and principal contractors, and provide clear progress updates.
Controlling costs and contracts: Monitor budgets, forecasts, variations, change orders and contractual obligations, working closely with the commercial team and Quantity Surveyors.
Connecting site and workshop: Act as the link between project delivery and workshop operations, ensuring fabrication, logistics and installation requirements remain aligned.
Solving problems: Tackle technical challenges, constructability issues and programme risks promptly, bringing the project team together to agree practical solutions.
Maintaining safety and quality: Ensure the team follows health, safety and environmental requirements, manages Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), and delivers work to the required specifications.
Managing project documentation: Oversee programmes, work packages, RFIs, method statements, project records and internal and external reporting.
Delivering successful handovers: Ensure quality records, O&M manuals and all associated handover documentation are completed accurately and on time.
You'll be expected to maintain a reliable presence on site, lead by example and hold the project team to high standards throughout delivery.
What You'll Bring
At least five years' experience managing projects within structural steelwork, steel erection or heavy construction.
A strong understanding of steel construction methods, materials, erection sequences and site operations.
The ability to interpret structural drawings, shop drawings, erection plans and 3D models.
Experience with project planning software such as Asta or Primavera P6.
Proficiency with Trimble and Trimble Connect, alongside PDF markup tools such as Bluebeam.
A sound understanding of contract administration, financial control and working alongside Quantity Surveyors.
Strong leadership, organisation and communication skills, with the confidence to manage clients, subcontractors and multidisciplinary teams.
A proactive approach to planning, problem-solving and keeping projects accountable to programme.
A full, valid driving licence and willingness to travel to project sites.
CSCS and SMSTS, or equivalent relevant site safety qualifications.
Additional Experience That Will Stand Out
A degree or diploma in Civil Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline would be beneficial, as would NEBOSH or IOSH certification. Familiarity with BIM, Tekla Structures, crane lift planning, heavy steel logistics and managing complex handovers would also be advantageous.
What Success Looks Like
You'll have clear programmes in place, trades organised ahead of mobilisation, strong communication between the workshop and site, and a project team that understands its responsibilities. Risks will be addressed early, costs and quality will be controlled, and clients will have confidence in the way their projects are being managed.
Above all, you'll take ownership. You'll be the person who keeps the moving parts aligned, sets expectations and drives the project through to a safe, successful handover.
