Quantity Surveyor - Structural Steelwork
Location: Newport, South Wales
The steelwork on a project might be measured in tonnes, but its commercial success comes down to the detail behind every figure. From pricing a package and tracking costs to recovering variations and agreeing the final account, the decisions made along the way determine whether a project delivers the margin it was priced to achieve.
A structural steelwork contractor in Newport is looking for a Quantity Surveyor who understands that balance. Someone who can keep a firm grip on the numbers, protect commercial interests and work closely with the teams delivering the steel on site.
What You'll Be Doing
You'll take ownership of the commercial side of structural steel projects, following the money from the early stages through to final account.
Commercial control: Monitor project budgets, costs, cash flow and profitability, identifying issues before they affect the bottom line.
Contract management: Review contract terms, understand the risks and make sure commercial obligations are met.
Cost reporting: Prepare cost-value reconciliations, forecasts and financial reports that give the project team a clear picture of performance.
Variations and valuations: Identify changes to the original scope, price additional works and make sure the value of work completed is properly recovered.
Payments and applications: Manage applications for payment, valuations and outstanding payments to maintain cash flow.
Subcontractor accounts: Help procure subcontract packages, assess applications and manage payments through to settlement.
Final accounts: Negotiate and agree final accounts with clients, main contractors and subcontractors.
Team collaboration: Work alongside Project Managers, estimators, designers and operational teams to keep projects commercially on track.
What You'll Bring
You'll understand that structural steelwork has its own commercial considerations, from interpreting steelwork drawings and specifications to managing changes as projects move from design into fabrication and erection.
You'll ideally have:
Experience as a Quantity Surveyor or Commercial Surveyor within structural steelwork, steel fabrication, steel erection or a closely related environment.
A sound understanding of construction contracts, valuations, variations and final accounts.
Experience managing project costs, budgets, forecasts and commercial reporting.
The ability to interpret drawings, specifications and scopes of work.
Confidence negotiating with clients, main contractors and subcontractors.
Strong communication skills and the ability to build effective relationships with project teams.
A relevant Quantity Surveying qualification or equivalent industry experience.
Why Consider It?
If you already understand the structural steelwork industry, you'll know that commercial management is about more than keeping spreadsheets up to date. It's about understanding what is happening on the project, recognising where costs or changes could affect the margin, and making sure the commercial position reflects the work actually being delivered.
This role offers the opportunity to put that experience to use across structural steel projects, with responsibility spanning the commercial lifecycle rather than being limited to one part of the process.
