Welder/Fabricator - Structural Steel
Location: Builth Wells
Salary: Dependent on experience
Job Type: Permanent, Full Time
The Company
When a piece of structural steel leaves the workshop, there is nowhere to hide.
It either fits when it reaches site, or someone has to fix it.
This is a specialist structural steel operation producing the beams, frames and connections that go into major construction projects. The workshop is set up around getting that steel right before it leaves the floor - accurate fit-up, clean welds, correct dimensions and quality that stands up to inspection.
They're looking for a Welder/Fabricator who takes the same pride in the finished piece of steel as the person erecting it on site.
The Role
You'll take drawings and raw steel and turn them into finished structural members ready for delivery and erection.
You'll:
Read fabrication drawings, weld symbols and cutting lists before putting steel together.
Set out sections and assemblies accurately, checking dimensions, squareness, holes and connections before welding.
Fit and weld structural steel using the appropriate procedures, including fillet, butt and positional welds.
Inspect your own work as you go, catching distortion, poor fit-up or dimensional issues before they become rework.
Operate workshop equipment including cranes, lifting gear, grinders and thermal cutting equipment safely.
Deliver against live production priorities while keeping material traceability, weld records and quality requirements in place.
The work is planned around real project programmes, so getting the job right matters just as much as getting it out.
The Candidate
You'll already know structural steel fabrication from the workshop floor.
You'll need:
Proven experience welding and fabricating structural steel - this isn't a light fabrication or maintenance-only position.
Current coded welding qualifications relevant to structural steel procedures, or the ability to qualify promptly.
Confidence reading fabrication drawings, weld symbols and cutting lists.
Experience with workshop cranes, slings, grinders and thermal cutting equipment.
A track record of accurate fit-up and producing work that passes inspection without unnecessary repair.
A safe, reliable approach to working to production programmes and project deadlines.
Why This Role?
You'll see the connection between what you build in the workshop and what happens on site.
Your steel won't disappear into an anonymous subcontract package. You'll be producing members that go on to become part of a finished building, working alongside experienced fabricators, fitters, inspectors and site teams.
It's a mid-sized operation where good welders are known, trusted and given responsibility for getting important work right.
Health, safety and quality are part of the fabrication process from the start, not something checked after the work is finished.
How to Apply
If you can take structural steel from drawing to finished fabrication and produce work that site teams can erect without fighting it, I'd like to hear from you.
