Senior Structural Project Manager

Structural Steel Installation | UK Projects

Location: London
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
Job Type: Permanent, Full-Time

Lead Projects. Drive Performance. Deliver Excellence.

Are you an experienced Project Manager with a strong background in structural steel, steel erection or heavy construction? This is an opportunity to take ownership of major installation projects, leading teams from initial planning through to successful completion.

You'll play a pivotal role in coordinating site operations, managing project programmes and budgets, maintaining high standards of health and safety, and building strong relationships with clients and project stakeholders.

This role would suit a confident, organised project leader who understands the complexities of structural steel installation and can bring people, resources and plans together to deliver projects safely, efficiently and to specification.

The Role

As Senior Structural Project Manager, you'll oversee the full project lifecycle, providing leadership across planning, site delivery, commercial control, quality and client management.

Key Responsibilities

Project Planning & Delivery

  • Plan, coordinate and oversee structural steel installation projects from mobilisation through to completion.

  • Develop and manage project programmes, lookahead plans and key milestones to keep delivery on track.

  • Coordinate labour, subcontractors, trades and resources well in advance of site requirements.

  • Use 2D drawing mark-ups, visual planning tools and project models to communicate requirements clearly.

  • Maintain a strong site presence, resolving issues quickly and keeping project teams aligned.

Project Documentation & Reporting

  • Manage project documentation, including contracts, programmes, work packages, RFIs, change orders and method statements.

  • Lead constructability reviews and method statement discussions to ensure practical, coordinated delivery.

  • Chair site meetings, report progress and maintain accurate daily and weekly project records.

  • Ensure reporting and documentation are completed accurately and within required timescales.

Commercial & Contract Management

  • Monitor project budgets, costs, forecasts and financial performance.

  • Work closely with Quantity Surveyors and commercial colleagues to manage scope, variations and contractual obligations.

  • Support effective contract administration and financial control throughout the project lifecycle.

Site, Subcontractor & Supplier Coordination

  • Manage subcontractors, suppliers and site trades to achieve programme, quality and performance targets.

  • Coordinate activities between site teams and workshop operations.

  • Resolve technical challenges and operational issues efficiently.

  • Maintain accountability across the project team, ensuring consistently high standards of delivery.

Health, Safety, Quality & Handover

  • Ensure health, safety and environmental requirements are maintained across project sites.

  • Monitor quality and ensure works comply with specifications and relevant standards.

  • Review and manage Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs).

  • Coordinate operation and maintenance manuals and associated handover documentation.

  • Drive projects through to safe, successful and well-managed completion.

Client & Stakeholder Relationships

  • Build and maintain effective relationships with clients, engineers, designers and other project stakeholders.

  • Act as a key point of contact, providing clear communication on progress, risks and project issues.

  • Manage expectations and coordinate timely solutions to challenges as they arise.

About You

You'll be an experienced construction project manager who understands structural steel installation and can confidently lead projects in a demanding site environment.

You'll ideally bring:

  • At least five years' Project Management experience within structural steel, steel erection or heavy construction.

  • Strong knowledge of steel construction methods, materials, site operations and installation processes.

  • The ability to interpret structural drawings, fabrication drawings and erection plans.

  • Experience using project planning software such as Asta Project or Primavera P6.

  • Proficiency with Trimble and Trimble Connect, alongside PDF mark-up tools such as Bluebeam.

  • A sound understanding of contract administration, project budgets and commercial controls.

  • Strong leadership, communication, organisation and problem-solving skills.

  • Confidence managing subcontractors, coordinating multiple trades and holding teams accountable.

  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.

  • A valid UK driving licence and willingness to travel to project sites.

  • CSCS, SMSTS or an equivalent relevant site safety qualification.

Desirable Experience

It would be advantageous if you also have:

  • A degree or diploma in Civil Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline.

  • NEBOSH or IOSH health and safety qualifications.

  • Familiarity with BIM and steel detailing software, including Tekla Structures.

  • Experience coordinating crane lifts and heavy steel logistics.

  • Experience managing ITPs, O&M manuals and project handovers.

What Will Make You Successful?

You'll be a proactive and accountable project leader who can balance programme, cost, quality and safety without losing sight of the client relationship.

You'll communicate clearly, make informed decisions under pressure and take ownership of challenges. Most importantly, you'll know how to bring project teams together, coordinate multiple trades and maintain high standards from the first planning meeting through to final handover.
