Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) Electrical Engineer * California

⚡ Most BESS projects never make it past the planning stage.

The studies get done.

The permits get submitted.

The designs look good on paper.

But turning utility-scale energy storage into real, operating infrastructure is a different challenge entirely.

That's exactly where this opportunity comes in.

A rapidly expanding organisation at the forefront of industrial electrification and energy infrastructure is building out its EPC engineering capability and is looking for a Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) Electrical Engineer to help deliver the next generation of grid-connected energy projects.

This isn't a role focused on maintaining existing assets.

It's about designing, integrating, and delivering large-scale energy storage systems that support the future of power infrastructure.

The Company 🔋

This organisation operates at the intersection of advanced manufacturing, energy infrastructure, and large-scale electrification.

As power demands continue to increase across industrial facilities, the business is investing heavily in energy storage, grid integration, and resilient electrical infrastructure to support long-term growth.

Engineering teams work closely with construction, commissioning, and operations, creating an environment where designs move beyond drawings and become critical infrastructure in the field.

With significant investment already underway and a growing pipeline of projects, this is a business building for the future rather than maintaining the past.

The Role

You will:

→ Lead electrical engineering efforts for utility-scale lithium-ion BESS projects from concept through construction

→ Own AC and DC electrical system design including transformers, inverters, battery systems, protection equipment, and power distribution infrastructure

→ Support utility interconnection studies, permitting activities, and regulatory compliance requirements

→ Develop single-line diagrams, schematics, grounding plans, protection strategies, and construction-ready engineering packages

→ Perform power system studies including load flow, short circuit, arc flash, and protection coordination

→ Act as a technical resource for complex BESS engineering challenges while supporting project delivery teams through construction and commissioning

This is a role where you'll see projects through from early-stage design all the way to energisation.

Why This Role Exists 📈

Energy storage is becoming a critical part of modern electrical infrastructure.

As project volume continues to grow, the business is expanding its internal engineering capability to take greater ownership of BESS design, grid integration, and technical execution.

This hire will play a key role in helping shape how future energy storage projects are engineered and delivered.

What They're Looking For

Must Have

✔ Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering

✔ Professional Engineer (PE) licence in any U.S. state

✔ Experience within energy storage, renewable energy, microgrid, or utility-scale power projects

✔ Strong understanding of BESS design, deployment, and grid integration

✔ Experience with applicable standards including NEC 705, NEC 706, IEEE 1547, UL 9540, and NFPA 855

✔ Experience using ETAP, SKM, HOMER, or similar power system modelling tools

Nice To Have

✔ Utility interconnection experience

✔ Transmission-level power systems exposure

✔ Experience with PSSE, PSLF, PSCAD, or similar simulation software

✔ HVDC, microgrid, or hybrid energy systems experience

✔ Engineer of Record experience

Why This Opportunity Stands Out 🔧

→ Work on utility-scale and distributed energy storage projects rather than repetitive design work

→ Influence projects from concept through commissioning

→ Join a business investing heavily in electrification and energy infrastructure

→ Exposure to grid integration, renewable energy, and next-generation power systems

→ Opportunity to help shape engineering standards and best practices as the team grows

→ Technical ownership with visibility across engineering, construction, and operations

For the right engineer, this is an opportunity to work on the infrastructure that will help define how energy is stored, managed, and delivered over the coming decade.
