Site Quantity Surveyor - Structural Steel

Location: Wexford
Salary: Competitive, depending on experience
Job Type: Permanent, Full Time

When you're working on structural steel projects, the commercial detail is just as important as the steel itself.

We're looking for an experienced Site Quantity Surveyor to join a specialist structural steel contractor delivering design, fabrication and erection projects across Ireland and the UK.

This is a hands-on role where you'll be closely involved with live projects, working from drawings, site progress and contract information to make sure completed work is accurately measured, valued and paid for.

You'll work closely with site managers, erectors, project teams and the wider commercial function, giving you direct visibility of how projects are progressing both on site and commercially.

The Role

You'll take responsibility for the commercial management of your projects from site, ensuring completed works are properly captured and commercial risks are identified early.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Measuring and valuing completed structural steelwork.

  • Preparing and submitting monthly applications for payment.

  • Tracking site progress against fabrication and erection programmes.

  • Identifying, pricing and negotiating variations and additional works.

  • Supporting the preparation and submission of contractual claims.

  • Reviewing drawings, specifications and contract documentation to identify commercial opportunities and risks.

  • Reconciling site records with fabrication output and erection progress.

  • Monitoring project costs and producing accurate cost-to-complete forecasts.

  • Providing Project Managers and the Commercial Manager with clear commercial reports and recommendations.

  • Maintaining accurate records of measurements, valuations, variations and correspondence.

  • Supporting the preparation and agreement of final accounts.

  • Working with the wider commercial team to ensure site information is accurately reflected in cost systems and project models.

  • Using available Tekla and project data to support accurate measurement and commercial reporting.

What We're Looking For

You'll ideally have previous experience as a Quantity Surveyor, Site Quantity Surveyor or Commercial Surveyor within structural steel, steel erection or a similar specialist construction environment.

You'll need:

  • Proven experience measuring and valuing structural steelwork on live construction projects.

  • The ability to read and understand structural steel drawings.

  • Strong knowledge of contracts, variations, valuations and claims.

  • Experience monitoring project progress and forecasting remaining costs.

  • Strong numerical and analytical skills.

  • Excellent attention to detail and commercial awareness.

  • The ability to produce clear and well-supported commercial reports.

  • Strong communication skills when dealing with clients, main contractors, site teams and subcontractors.

  • A practical, hands-on approach to commercial management.

  • Willingness to spend significant time working across sites in Ireland and the UK.

Experience working with Tekla or other structural steel modelling/project systems would be advantageous.

Why Consider This Role?

This is a genuine site-based commercial role, giving you direct involvement in the projects rather than keeping you removed from the work behind an office desk.

You'll be able to see the steel being fabricated and erected, understand the progress on site and use that information to directly influence project profitability and cash flow.

You'll also work alongside an in-house design and engineering function, giving you visibility across the project lifecycle from design and fabrication through to erection.

What You Can Expect

  • A role with direct influence over project profitability and cash flow.

  • Structural steel projects across Ireland and the UK.

  • Exposure to both fabrication and erection operations.

  • Close working relationships with site managers, erectors, project teams and commercial colleagues.

  • Access to Tekla and established project measurement systems.

  • A varied project portfolio across industrial, commercial and specialist steelwork.

  • The opportunity to work within a privately owned, family-run business.

  • A stable environment with an established workforce and in-house design, engineering and fabrication capabilities.

The Person We're Looking For

You may currently be working as a Site Quantity Surveyor, Quantity Surveyor, Project Quantity Surveyor or Commercial Surveyor and want a role where your work has a direct impact on the commercial success of live projects.

You'll be someone who enjoys being close to the action, understands how steelwork is delivered and is confident challenging figures, identifying variations and making sure completed work is properly valued.

If you want to take ownership of the commercial side of structural steel projects and see the direct results of your work on site, this could be an excellent opportunity.
