Protect Project Margins. Drive Commercial Success.
Are you an experienced Quantity Surveyor with a strong commercial background in construction, structural steelwork or specialist subcontracting?
Do you have the commercial confidence to manage complex contracts, protect margins and ensure projects achieve their financial objectives?
We're working with an established engineering and construction business looking to strengthen its commercial team with an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor. This is an opportunity to take ownership of projects from contract award through to final account, working closely with project delivery teams and clients to maximise commercial performance.
You'll play a key role in managing costs, identifying risks and opportunities, negotiating contractual matters and ensuring the business receives its full commercial entitlement.
If you're commercially astute, confident in negotiations and enjoy working at the heart of project delivery, this could be an excellent next step in your career.
What You'll Be Doing
As Senior Quantity Surveyor, you'll take responsibility for the commercial management of allocated projects, ensuring costs are controlled, contractual obligations are met and financial outcomes are maximised.
Your responsibilities will include:
Managing projects commercially from contract award through to completion and final account.
Establishing and maintaining project budgets, cost plans, forecasts and commercial controls.
Monitoring project performance, forecasting final costs and protecting agreed margins.
Preparing cost-value reconciliations (CVRs), commercial reports and cash-flow forecasts.
Identifying commercial risks, opportunities and potential cost savings at an early stage.
Reviewing contract documentation to understand obligations, risks and payment requirements.
Managing variations, claims, extensions of time and other contractual matters where applicable.
Preparing and negotiating applications for payment, valuations and contractual entitlements.
Maintaining accurate commercial records, contractual correspondence and project documentation.
Supporting procurement activities, including obtaining quotations, evaluating tenders and negotiating supplier and subcontractor terms.
Managing subcontractor valuations, variations, payments and final accounts.
Building strong commercial relationships with clients, main contractors, suppliers and subcontractors.
Attending commercial and project meetings, providing clear financial updates and resolving issues proactively.
Working closely with project managers, estimators, engineering teams, procurement and site personnel to align commercial decisions with project delivery.
Preparing and negotiating final accounts, ensuring variations and claims are captured and commercial leakage is minimised.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for an experienced commercial professional who can combine strong contractual knowledge with practical project understanding and a proactive approach to managing financial performance.
Ideally, you'll have:
Proven experience as a Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor within the UK construction industry.
Strong commercial management experience across live construction projects.
Experience managing projects from contract award through to final account.
A sound understanding of cost control, forecasting, CVRs and commercial reporting.

Strong contract administration, negotiation and commercial risk-management skills.
Experience procuring and managing subcontractors and suppliers.
The ability to identify opportunities, challenge costs and protect project profitability.
Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills.
Strong organisational skills, attention to detail and proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
The confidence to work independently, take ownership of commercial decisions and manage competing deadlines.
Experience with JCT and NEC contracts, subcontract agreements, framework agreements or bespoke construction contracts would be highly advantageous.
Industry Background
Experience within one or more of the following environments would be particularly relevant:
Structural steelwork and steel fabrication.

What Will Set You Apart?
You'll be commercially confident, analytical and comfortable challenging costs or contractual positions when necessary. You'll understand how design, procurement, fabrication, programme and installation decisions affect the financial performance of a project.
Just as importantly, you'll know how to protect commercial interests while maintaining constructive relationships with clients and supply-chain partners.
