Senior Quantity Surveyor - Structural Steel

Location: Ireland - projects across Southern Ireland
Salary: Competitive, depending on experience
Job Type: Permanent, Full Time

The commercial success of a structural steel project depends on having someone who understands both the numbers and what is happening on site.

We're looking for an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to join a well-established structural steel contractor delivering major projects across Ireland and the UK.

This is a senior commercial position where you'll take responsibility for the commercial management of projects from cost planning and procurement through to variations, valuations and final accounts.

You'll work closely with clients, subcontractors, site teams, project managers and the wider commercial function, with regular site visits forming an important part of the role.

The Role

You'll take ownership of the commercial aspects of your projects, ensuring costs are controlled, changes are captured and the business is paid properly for the work delivered.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing subcontractor procurement, including preparing work packages and finalising subcontractor accounts.

  • Reviewing subcontractor quotations and negotiating commercial terms.

  • Preparing labour and equipment allocation sheets for site activities.

  • Reviewing construction and fabrication drawings and identifying changes or alterations from tender information.

  • Identifying, pricing and negotiating variations and contractual claims.

  • Preparing and submitting interim payment applications.

  • Monitoring outstanding payments and actively managing client cash flow.

  • Carrying out regular site visits to understand progress and identify commercial issues.

  • Completing detailed take-offs for structural steel, decking and cladding.

  • Preparing, submitting and agreeing client accounts.

  • Monitoring project costs and commercial performance.

  • Supporting project teams with commercial advice throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Identifying commercial risks and opportunities and communicating these to the wider project team.

  • Managing final accounts and ensuring projects are commercially closed out.

What We're Looking For

You'll already have significant experience working as a Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor, ideally within structural steel or a similar specialist construction environment.

We're looking for:

  • Minimum 7 years' Quantity Surveying experience.

  • Strong experience within structural steelwork or similar construction projects.

  • Strong understanding of commercial and contractual management.

  • Proven experience managing variations, claims, procurement and final accounts.

  • Experience preparing valuations and interim payment applications.

  • The ability to carry out accurate take-offs from drawings.

  • Strong negotiation and communication skills.

  • The confidence to work independently and take ownership of commercial decisions.

  • The ability to work effectively with project managers, site teams, clients and subcontractors.

  • Good knowledge of Excel, Word and Outlook, together with relevant project management/commercial software.

  • A Quantity Surveying degree or relevant professional qualification.

  • Experience within the Irish steelwork market would be advantageous but is not essential.

Why Consider This Role?

This is an opportunity to take genuine ownership of the commercial side of major structural steel projects rather than focusing on one isolated part of the process.

You'll be involved from procurement and cost planning through to delivery, variations, valuations and final account, working closely with the teams responsible for getting the steelwork delivered.

The projects are spread across Ireland, with recent requirements covering areas including Limerick, Cork, Longford and other locations across Southern Ireland, giving you variety in both projects and working environments.

What You Can Expect

  • Senior-level responsibility across major structural steel projects.

  • Regular involvement with live construction sites.

  • Direct responsibility for subcontractor procurement and commercial management.

  • Exposure to structural steel, decking and cladding packages.

  • Opportunity to influence project profitability and commercial performance.

  • Close working relationships with project management, site and construction teams.

  • Work with an established structural steel contractor delivering projects across Ireland and the UK.

  • A role where your commercial judgement can directly influence project outcomes.

The Person We're Looking For

You might currently be working as a Senior Quantity Surveyor, Quantity Surveyor, Senior Commercial Surveyor or Commercial Manager within structural steel, specialist construction or another similar environment.

You'll be commercially confident, comfortable negotiating with clients and subcontractors, and able to spot changes and commercial risks before they become problems.

You'll also be someone who is happy to get out onto site. Understanding what is actually happening on the ground is an important part of making good commercial decisions.

If you have strong Quantity Surveying experience and understand the commercial demands of structural steel projects, this could be an excellent opportunity to take your career to the next level.
