Quantity Surveyor - Structural Steelwork

Location: Barnsley
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
Job Type: Permanent, Full-Time

Take Commercial Ownership of Structural Steel Projects

Are you a Quantity Surveyor with experience in structural steelwork, steel fabrication or steel erection? This is an opportunity to take ownership of the commercial performance of construction projects, helping to protect margins, manage contractual obligations and ensure work is delivered with strong financial control.

Working closely with project managers, estimators, design teams and operational colleagues, you'll play a key role in managing project costs, identifying commercial opportunities and ensuring variations and additional works are properly valued and recovered.

This role would suit a commercially minded professional who understands the structural steel industry and is confident managing projects from initial contract review through to final account agreement.

The Role

As Quantity Surveyor, you'll be responsible for the commercial and contractual management of structural steel projects, ensuring costs are controlled, risks are managed and financial performance is closely monitored throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

Commercial Management & Cost Control

  • Monitor project costs, budgets, cash flow and profitability.

  • Prepare cost-value reconciliations (CVRs), financial forecasts and regular commercial reports.

  • Identify potential commercial risks and opportunities, taking action to protect project margins.

  • Maintain accurate financial records and provide clear updates on project performance.

Contract Administration

  • Review contract terms and identify potential commercial or contractual risks.

  • Ensure contractual obligations, notices and procedures are managed appropriately.

  • Support effective commercial decision-making throughout the project lifecycle.

Variations & Change Management

  • Identify changes to project scope and assess their commercial impact.

  • Value additional works and ensure variations are recorded, submitted and recovered.

  • Work with project teams to maintain clear records of changes and associated costs.

Applications, Payments & Final Accounts

  • Prepare applications for payment and manage project valuations.

  • Monitor outstanding payments and support effective cash flow management.

  • Negotiate and agree final accounts with clients, main contractors and subcontractors.

  • Ensure commercial matters are resolved promptly and professionally.

Subcontractor & Project Team Coordination

  • Support the procurement of subcontract packages and assess subcontractor applications.

  • Manage subcontract accounts through to final settlement.

  • Work closely with Project Managers, estimators, design teams and operational staff to maintain commercial control and support successful project delivery.

About You

You'll have a solid background in Quantity Surveying or Commercial Surveying, ideally within structural steelwork, steel fabrication, steel erection or a closely related construction environment.

You'll bring:

  • Experience managing commercial aspects of construction projects.

  • A strong understanding of construction contracts, valuations, variations and final accounts.

  • Experience with project budgets, cost forecasting, CVRs and financial reporting.

  • The ability to interpret drawings, project specifications and scopes of work.

  • Strong negotiation, communication and stakeholder management skills.

  • A proactive approach to identifying commercial risks and protecting project profitability.

  • A relevant Quantity Surveying qualification or equivalent practical industry experience.

Experience within structural steelwork is particularly important. Candidates who have managed the full commercial lifecycle of steelwork packages-from contract review and cost control through to variations, payments and final accounts-are likely to be well suited to this opportunity.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

  • Take commercial responsibility for structural steel projects.

  • Work collaboratively with project delivery and operational teams.

  • Apply your industry knowledge to protect margins and improve commercial outcomes.

  • Develop your experience within a specialist construction environment.
