Quantity Surveyor - Structural Steelwork

Location: Newport
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
Job Type: Permanent, Full-Time

Protect project margins and drive commercial success

Are you an experienced Quantity Surveyor with a background in structural steelwork or heavy fabrication? This is an opportunity to take ownership of the commercial performance of projects from initial tender through to final account, helping ensure work is priced accurately, costs are controlled and contractual value is recovered.

Working closely with estimating, project management, procurement, design and production teams, you'll combine strong commercial judgement with an understanding of how steelwork is manufactured and installed. Your contribution will help projects run efficiently while protecting profitability, quality and client relationships.

The Role

As Quantity Surveyor, you'll manage the commercial aspects of structural steelwork projects throughout their lifecycle, from pricing and procurement through to delivery and final account.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing accurate tender estimates and commercial submissions that reflect material, labour, fabrication, coating, transport and installation costs.

  • Developing project budgets, cost plans and cash-flow forecasts following contract award.

  • Measuring steelwork from drawings, specifications and technical documentation.

  • Supporting procurement through subcontractor pricing, supplier comparisons and commercial negotiations.

  • Monitoring project expenditure, commitments and forecast final costs against approved budgets.

  • Managing variations, change control and contractual notifications to protect commercial entitlements.

  • Preparing applications for payment, valuing completed work and managing subcontractor accounts.

  • Negotiating and agreeing final accounts with clients and subcontractors.

  • Identifying cost pressures, material waste and opportunities to improve project efficiency.

  • Providing timely commercial reports and recommendations to project teams and senior management.

  • Working with design, production and site teams to understand how programme changes and fabrication decisions affect cost.

  • Ensuring commercial activities align with contractual obligations, project specifications, relevant UKCA/CE marking requirements and health and safety responsibilities.

About You

You'll be a commercially focused Quantity Surveyor who understands the relationship between technical design, fabrication, site installation and project profitability. You'll be comfortable working across departments, challenging assumptions and resolving commercial issues before they affect the final outcome.

To be considered, you'll ideally have:

  • Proven experience as a Quantity Surveyor within structural steelwork, steel fabrication or heavy engineering.

  • Experience managing projects from tender stage through to final account.

  • The ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications and produce accurate measurements and costings.

  • A sound understanding of construction contracts, payment mechanisms, variations and change control.

  • Experience managing budgets, forecasting costs and monitoring project margins.

  • Commercial negotiation skills and experience working with suppliers, subcontractors and clients.

  • An understanding of fabrication processes, steel procurement and site erection activities.

  • Strong numerical, analytical and communication skills.

  • A relevant Quantity Surveying or construction commercial qualification, or equivalent practical experience.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

  • End-to-end commercial ownership: Be involved from tender pricing through to project delivery and final account.

  • Specialist steelwork projects: Work on a varied portfolio of structural steel packages, from standard frames to more complex structures.

  • Close to operations: Work alongside fabrication, design, procurement and site teams, giving you visibility of the commercial impact of decisions.

  • Meaningful influence: Help protect margins, manage risk and identify opportunities to improve project performance.

  • Established working environment: Join a specialist construction business with the resources and expertise to deliver projects across the UK and European markets.

Benefits

  • Sick pay scheme.

  • Health plan.

  • Cycle-to-work scheme.

  • Option to purchase additional annual leave.
