Quantity Surveyor - Structural Steelwork

Location: Leicestershire
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
Job Type: Permanent, Full-Time

Take control of the commercial performance of major steelwork projects

Are you an experienced Quantity Surveyor with a background in structural steelwork, engineering or heavy construction? This is an opportunity to take a leading role in managing the commercial performance of technically challenging projects, from tender stage through to final account.

Working alongside project managers, estimators, production teams and commercial colleagues, you'll help ensure projects are accurately priced, costs are controlled and contractual entitlements are protected. Your commercial judgement will have a direct impact on profitability, cash flow and successful project delivery.

The Role

As Quantity Surveyor, you'll manage the commercial lifecycle of allocated projects, providing accurate cost information, negotiating contractual matters and identifying opportunities to improve project performance.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing tender estimates, detailed costings and cash-flow forecasts for structural steelwork packages.

  • Measuring and pricing steelwork from technical drawings and project documentation.

  • Administering construction contracts, including NEC3/NEC4 and JCT, where applicable.

  • Managing variations, compensation events, claims and final accounts to ensure all work is properly valued.

  • Leading regular cost-to-complete reviews with project managers and identifying potential commercial risks.

  • Maintaining accurate cost reports, forecasts and risk registers to support effective decision-making.

  • Identifying value-engineering opportunities to improve project efficiency without compromising quality, safety or programme.

  • Negotiating subcontractor packages and material supply agreements to secure competitive terms and manage cost exposure.

  • Working closely with fabrication, erection and site teams to understand project progress and monitor costs.

  • Supporting and sharing knowledge with junior commercial team members.

About You

You'll be commercially astute, detail-oriented and confident managing contractual and financial matters across complex construction projects. You'll understand how technical decisions, fabrication processes and site activities influence overall project costs.

To be successful, you'll ideally have:

  • Proven experience as a Quantity Surveyor within structural steelwork, steel fabrication, heavy engineering or a related construction sector.

  • Practical experience administering NEC contracts, particularly NEC3 or NEC4.

  • The ability to interpret general arrangement drawings and produce accurate measurements and costings.

  • A good understanding of fabrication methods, steel procurement, erection sequences and associated cost drivers.

  • Experience managing variations, claims, subcontractor negotiations and final accounts.

  • Strong analytical, numerical and commercial negotiation skills.

  • The confidence to challenge costs, identify risks and recommend practical solutions.

  • An RICS qualification or equivalent professional accreditation, or demonstrable relevant experience.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

  • Commercial ownership: Play a key role in protecting margins, managing costs and improving financial performance.

  • Complex projects: Apply your expertise to substantial steelwork packages within demanding construction and infrastructure environments.

  • End-to-end involvement: Work across estimating, procurement, fabrication, erection and final account.

  • Collaborative team: Partner with commercial, project management and operational colleagues to resolve challenges and deliver results.

  • Career development: An opportunity to develop your commercial leadership skills and progress towards a more senior commercial position.
