Quantity Surveyor - Structural Steel & Engineering

Location: Newport
Salary: Competitive, depending on experience
Job Type: Permanent, Full Time

When you're working on specialist steel engineering projects, commercial control is just as important as technical delivery.

We're looking for an experienced Quantity Surveyor to join a specialist structural steelwork and engineering business delivering complex projects across the UK.

From infrastructure and rail through to aviation, architectural and bespoke steelwork, you'll take responsibility for the commercial performance of allocated projects, ensuring costs are controlled, contractual requirements are managed and opportunities to protect profitability are identified early.

This is a varied role working closely with Project Managers, Estimators, Engineering and Site teams, as well as clients, subcontractors and suppliers.

The Role

You'll manage the commercial side of projects from initial cost planning through to final account and project close-out.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing cost plans and project budgets.

  • Monitoring project costs against agreed budgets.

  • Preparing and maintaining accurate cash-flow forecasts.

  • Managing the commercial performance of allocated projects.

  • Monitoring project expenditure and identifying potential risks.

  • Supporting contract administration and ensuring contractual requirements are met.

  • Reviewing and managing variations, valuations and commercial changes.

  • Assessing the financial impact of changes to project scope.

  • Working closely with Project Managers to maintain commercial control.

  • Liaising with Estimating, Engineering, Procurement and Site teams.

  • Building strong working relationships with clients, subcontractors and suppliers.

  • Preparing commercial reports and contributing to project reviews.

  • Identifying opportunities to improve project profitability.

  • Supporting the preparation and agreement of final accounts.

  • Ensuring commercial issues are identified and resolved before they impact project performance.

  • Maintaining accurate commercial records throughout the project lifecycle.

What We're Looking For

You'll ideally have previous experience as a Quantity Surveyor, Project Quantity Surveyor, Commercial Surveyor or Quantity Surveyor/Estimator within structural steel, engineering or specialist construction.

We're looking for someone with:

  • Strong Quantity Surveying or commercial experience.

  • Experience within structural steel, steelwork, engineering or construction.

  • Good understanding of construction or engineering contracts.

  • Experience managing project costs, budgets and forecasts.

  • Strong commercial awareness around variations, valuations and contractual matters.

  • Experience with cost planning and cash-flow forecasting.

  • The ability to identify commercial risks and opportunities.

  • Strong analytical and numerical skills.

  • Excellent organisational and time-management abilities.

  • Good communication and negotiation skills.

  • The ability to work closely with operational and project teams.

  • Confidence dealing with clients, subcontractors and suppliers.

Experience within structural steel or specialist steel engineering would be particularly advantageous.

Why Consider This Role?

This isn't a traditional building Quantity Surveyor position.

You'll be working on specialist steel engineering projects where understanding how steel is designed, fabricated and installed can make a real difference to commercial performance.

The project portfolio provides exposure to a range of technically interesting work, including:

  • Infrastructure projects

  • Rail

  • Aviation

  • Architectural steelwork

  • Bespoke structures

  • Specialist engineering projects

You'll work closely with the operational teams delivering the projects, giving you visibility of what's actually happening on the ground and allowing you to make informed commercial decisions.

What You Can Expect

  • A varied Quantity Surveying role within a specialist engineering environment.

  • Direct responsibility for the commercial performance of allocated projects.

  • Exposure to complex structural steelwork and engineering projects.

  • Involvement from cost planning through to final account.

  • Close working relationships with Project Management, Engineering, Estimating and Site teams.

  • The opportunity to identify and implement improvements to commercial performance.

  • A role where your commercial judgement can directly influence project profitability.

  • UK-wide project exposure across a range of specialist sectors.

The Person We're Looking For

You might currently be working as a Quantity Surveyor, Senior Quantity Surveyor, Commercial Surveyor or Project QS within structural steel, engineering, construction or another specialist project environment.

You'll be commercially minded and comfortable taking ownership of project costs, budgets and contractual matters.

You'll also be someone who enjoys working closely with project and operational teams rather than operating purely from a commercial office.

If you have strong Quantity Surveying experience and want to work on technically interesting structural steel and engineering projects, this could be an excellent opportunity.
