Quantity Surveyor
Location: Loughborough
Salary: Competitive, depending on experience
When steel forms part of critical infrastructure, getting the commercial side right matters just as much as getting the fabrication right.
We're looking for an experienced Quantity Surveyor to join a specialist structural steel fabricator working across major rail, highways, energy and construction projects.
This is a role where you'll have genuine influence over project profitability. From tender and cost planning through to variations, forecasting and final accounts, you'll help ensure projects remain commercially controlled while maintaining strong relationships with clients, suppliers and internal teams.
You'll work closely with Estimators, Project Managers and the wider production team, giving you visibility across the full project lifecycle.
What You'll Be Responsible For
Preparing accurate cost plans, tenders and commercial submissions for structural steel fabrication packages.
Measuring and valuing works throughout the project lifecycle.
Managing interim applications and valuations to ensure work completed is properly recovered.
Identifying, pricing and negotiating variations and additional works.
Forecasting project final accounts, costs and cash flow.
Monitoring project performance and highlighting commercial risks before they impact margin.
Administering subcontract and supply-chain packages.
Reviewing supplier and subcontractor costs against agreed allowances and budgets.
Supporting commercial negotiations with clients and suppliers.
Working closely with Project Managers, Estimators and production teams to maintain commercial control.
Supporting value-engineering exercises to identify savings without compromising quality, safety or project requirements.
Preparing and agreeing final accounts and ensuring commercial issues are closed out efficiently.
Capturing commercial lessons from completed projects to improve future estimating and project performance.
What We're Looking For
You'll ideally have previous Quantity Surveying or commercial experience within structural steel, steel fabrication, construction or another specialist engineering environment.
We're looking for someone with:
Proven experience working on construction, fabrication or specialist engineering contracts.
Strong understanding of cost control, valuations, variations and final accounts.
The ability to read and understand fabrication and engineering drawings.
Experience working with NEC, JCT or similar forms of contract.
Strong numerical and analytical skills.
Excellent attention to detail and commercial awareness.
The confidence to challenge costs and negotiate commercially while maintaining positive working relationships.
The ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
Strong communication skills when dealing with clients, suppliers and internal teams.
The right to work in the UK.
A willingness to be based at the company's Loughborough site.
Why This Role?
This is an opportunity to join an established specialist steel business with a long history of delivering work across some of the UK's most important infrastructure sectors.
You'll be working from a purpose-built manufacturing site, alongside an experienced commercial and production team, with the opportunity to make a visible impact on how projects are delivered commercially.
The role gives you exposure to the complete project lifecycle rather than focusing on one small part of the commercial process.
You'll be involved from tender and cost planning through to variations, forecasting and final account, giving you the opportunity to develop your commercial expertise across complex steelwork projects.
You'll Be Working Across Projects Including:
Rail infrastructure
Highways
Energy
Structural steelwork
Specialist fabrication
Construction projects
The Person We're Looking For
You may currently be working as a Quantity Surveyor, Project Quantity Surveyor, Commercial Surveyor or Assistant Quantity Surveyor within structural steel, fabrication, construction or a similar specialist environment.
Most importantly, you'll be commercially minded, detail-focused and comfortable taking ownership of the numbers.
If you enjoy understanding how a project makes money, spotting commercial risks before they become problems and working with project teams to protect value, this could be a great opportunity.
