Quantity Surveyor & Estimator - Structural Steel
Location: Monaghan, Ireland
Salary: €40,000-€60,000, depending on experience
Job Type: Full-time, permanent
Sector: Structural Steel
Working Pattern: Monday-Friday, with site/project travel
The Company
The steel on these projects doesn't stop at the fabrication stage.
It moves from tender, through design and procurement, onto site - and ultimately into some of the larger structural steel projects being delivered across Ireland.
The business behind this work is looking for someone who understands what happens to the numbers once a tender is won.
Someone who can price the work accurately, keep control of the commercial side once it is live, and spot the opportunities and problems before they become expensive.
The Role
This is a dual Quantity Surveyor & Estimator position, giving you involvement from the first tender through to the final account.
You will:
- Build accurate tenders, measurements and estimates, then manage the tender return process.
- Own cost control across structural steel contracts, keeping budgets, valuations and cash flow under control.
- Manage monthly valuations, cost-value reporting, subcontract liabilities, accruals and final accounts.
- Challenge subcontractor and supplier quotations, negotiate pricing and identify the best commercial value.
- Track variations, disruption, project trends, gains and losses - making sure commercial opportunities are not missed.
- Work directly with clients, consultants, architects, site teams and project management to keep the commercial position clear.
You will also have involvement in subcontract documentation, plant and labour records, payment notifications and value engineering as projects progress.
The Candidate
This role will suit someone who has seen both sides of the commercial process, estimating before the contract is won and quantity surveying once the steel is being delivered.
You will need:
- HNC or Degree in Quantity Surveying, Estimating or a related discipline.
- 5+ years' experience working for a Main Contractor.
- At least 3 years' Quantity Surveying experience.
- At least 3 years' estimating experience.
- At least 3 years' experience working on structural steel contracts.
- Experience working on commercial contracts.
- Strong Microsoft Office 365 skills.
- Ideally, previous experience managing structural steel projects.
You will need to be comfortable working independently, managing competing priorities and dealing directly with the people who influence the commercial outcome of a project.
Why Consider It?
- €40,000-€60,000 salary, depending on experience.
- A role covering the full commercial lifecycle, rather than being restricted to either estimating or QS duties.
- Exposure to large structural steel projects across Ireland.
- Direct involvement with clients, consultants, subcontractors and site teams.
- The opportunity to influence cost control, procurement, value engineering and commercial performance.
- Monday-Friday working pattern, with travel to sites and projects as required.
How to Apply
If you have a background in structural steel and can operate across both estimating and quantity surveying, this could be a good next move.
Send over your CV and we can have a confidential conversation about the business, the projects and what the role could look like for you.
