Quantity Surveyor - Structural Steel
Location: Barnsley, South Yorkshire
Job Type: Permanent, Full-time
Salary: Competitive, depending on experience
The Company
The steel leaving this business does not stay in the yard for long.
With more than 75 years in structural steel, this established business designs, manufactures and constructs steelwork for projects across the UK and Europe. Its facilities have the capacity to process around 50,000 tonnes of steel each year, covering everything from straightforward building frames to complex structures.
The business has built its reputation on the people behind the steel and the long-term relationships it has developed with clients and contractors.
Now, with multiple projects running nationwide, the commercial team needs an experienced Quantity Surveyor who can take ownership of the numbers and make sure the commercial side of each project is properly managed.
The Role
You will manage the commercial and contractual position across multiple live projects, working directly with clients, subcontractors and internal teams.
This is a role where you will see the projects through the commercial lifecycle rather than simply dealing with one part of the process.
You will:
- Own the commercial management of multiple projects, from contract through to final account.
- Control subcontractor accounts, reviewing documentation, terms, warranties and bonds.
- Manage variations, claims and measurements through interim valuations and final accounts.
- Track project costs, revenue and cashflow, identifying commercial risks before they become problems.
- Advise project teams, management and clients on commercial and contractual matters.
- Build strong working relationships with clients and subcontractors through regular project and site meetings.
The Candidate
You will have a minimum of five years' construction experience and understand how commercial decisions affect what happens on site.
Structural steel experience would be highly advantageous, but the business is open to Quantity Surveyors from the wider construction sector who can demonstrate the right commercial background.
You should have:
- Proven experience in construction commercial management.
- Experience managing subcontractor accounts.
- Knowledge of variations, claims, interim valuations and final accounts.
- Experience with cost control and cashflow forecasting.
- Confidence dealing directly with clients and subcontractors.
- A relevant HND or degree would be advantageous.
- RICS membership would be beneficial, but is not essential.
- Willingness to attend project sites nationwide.
Why This Opportunity Stands Out
- Join a business with 75+ years of structural steel experience.
- Work across projects ranging from standard building frames to complex structures.
- Be part of a business with the capacity to process approximately 50,000 tonnes of steel per year.
- Take genuine ownership of the commercial performance of your projects.
- Nationwide project exposure rather than being tied to one contract.
