The Opportunity
A growing structural steel contractor is looking to hire multiple Project Managers across its Virginia operations.
The business manages both structural and miscellaneous steel, with approximately 70% of its work focused on structural steel and 30% on miscellaneous metals. It handles both fabrication and erection, giving Project Managers involvement across the full project lifecycle.
A significant portion of the current workload is supporting data center construction across Northern Virginia, alongside other commercial steel projects.
The Role
As Project Manager, you will take ownership of steel projects from preconstruction and detailing through fabrication, delivery and field erection.
Typical responsibilities will include:
- Managing multiple structural and/or miscellaneous steel projects
- Coordinating detailing, engineering and shop drawing activities
- Monitoring fabrication schedules and material requirements
- Coordinating deliveries, erection activities and field requirements
- Managing project budgets, schedules and change orders
- Forecasting project costs and monitoring financial performance
- Maintaining communication with General Contractors and other project stakeholders
- Working closely with fabrication/shop teams and field operations
- Identifying potential issues during detailing and fabrication before they reach the field
- Supporting project closeout and overall contract delivery
Projects vary in size and scope, with PMs potentially managing several projects at different stages of detailing, fabrication, erection and pre-planning.
What We're Looking For
You should have previous Project Management experience within the structural steel and/or miscellaneous metals industry.
Experience across both structural and miscellaneous steel is beneficial, but not required. Candidates with a stronger background in either discipline will be considered.
Ideally, you will have:
- Structural steel fabrication and/or erection experience
- Experience managing steel projects through multiple phases
- Strong understanding of drawings, detailing and fabrication
- Experience coordinating steel erection and field operations
- Budget and change-order management experience
- Strong commercial awareness
- Experience dealing directly with General Contractors
- Ability to manage several projects simultaneously
- Strong planning, communication and problem-solving skills
Experience with data centers, secondary steel, equipment-support steel, stairs, rails or similar miscellaneous packages would be particularly valuable.
Working Pattern
The company has multiple operations across Virginia, providing some flexibility around where the successful candidate can be based.
This is primarily an office-based position with flexibility, and a three-day-per-week office arrangement may be considered depending on the individual and project requirements. Project Managers must remain responsive to General Contractors, field teams and changing project demands.
