Structural Steel Estimator
Location: Newport
Salary: Competitive, depending on experience
Job Type: Permanent, Full Time
A good structural steel estimate starts long before a price reaches the client.
We're looking for an experienced Structural Steel Estimator to join a specialist steelwork business in Newport, preparing accurate and commercially competitive estimates for structural steel projects from initial enquiry through to tender submission.
You'll need to understand more than just the numbers. You'll be comfortable reading drawings, understanding fabrication requirements and assessing the real costs involved in producing and erecting structural steelwork.
Working closely with engineering, project management, procurement and commercial teams, you'll help ensure projects are priced accurately, risks are identified early and tenders are submitted on time.
The Role
You'll take ownership of the estimating process from initial enquiry through to tender submission.
Your responsibilities will include:
Reviewing incoming structural steel tender enquiries.
Analysing structural drawings, specifications and scopes of work.
Preparing detailed estimates and commercial quotations.
Completing accurate quantities and take-offs for structural steelwork.
Pricing materials, fabrication, labour and installation.
Obtaining and assessing supplier and subcontractor quotations.
Comparing quotations to ensure the best commercial solution is achieved.
Identifying exclusions, assumptions and potential project risks.
Clarifying technical and commercial requirements with clients and contractors.
Working closely with engineering, project management, procurement and commercial teams.
Ensuring tenders are accurate, competitive and submitted within deadlines.
Supporting the business in securing profitable structural steel projects.
Maintaining accurate estimating records.
Supporting post-tender reviews and helping improve future estimating processes.
What We're Looking For
You'll ideally have previous experience as a Structural Steel Estimator, Steel Estimator, Estimator or Senior Estimator within a fabrication or structural steel environment.
We're looking for someone with:
Proven structural steel estimating experience.
Experience pricing both fabricated and erected steelwork.
Strong ability to read and interpret structural drawings.
Good understanding of structural steel fabrication processes.
Experience calculating steelwork quantities and producing accurate take-offs.
Experience preparing tenders from initial enquiry through to submission.
Strong commercial awareness and understanding of project costs.
The ability to identify potential risks, exclusions and additional costs.
Experience obtaining and assessing supplier and subcontractor quotations.
Confidence dealing with clients, contractors and suppliers.
Strong numerical skills and excellent attention to detail.
Good organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple tenders and deadlines.
Why Consider This Role?
This is an opportunity to join a specialist steelwork business where your estimating decisions will have a direct impact on the projects the company secures and the margins those projects achieve.
You'll be involved in understanding the project from the outset - looking at the drawings, assessing the quantities, understanding how the steel will be fabricated and erected, and turning all of that information into a commercially sound tender.
You'll also work closely with the teams who ultimately deliver the projects, giving you a strong connection between estimating, fabrication and site installation.
You'll Be Working Across
Structural steelwork
Steel fabrication
Steel erection
Materials and procurement
Labour and installation costs
Specialist subcontract packages
Commercial tendering
The Person We're Looking For
You might currently be working as a Structural Steel Estimator, Estimator, Senior Estimator or Steelwork Estimator and be looking for a new opportunity in the Newport area.
The key requirement is that you understand structural steel.
You'll know how to look at a drawing and work out what it means commercially - from steel quantities and fabrication through to labour, installation, suppliers and potential project risks.
If you have strong structural steel estimating experience and enjoy turning complex project information into accurate, competitive tenders, this could be an excellent opportunity.
