Estimator - Structural Steel
Location: London
Job Type: Full-time, permanent
Sector: Structural Steel / Construction
The Company
Before a piece of structural steel is fabricated, someone has to work out exactly what the job is going to take.
How much steel is involved. What it will cost to fabricate. What installation will require. Where the risks sit. And, ultimately, whether the project is commercially worth winning.
That's where this role comes in.
You'll be joining a structural steel business with a steady flow of tender opportunities, working on projects where getting the numbers right at the beginning can make a significant difference to how the job performs later.
The Role
You'll take tenders from the initial enquiry through to a completed commercial submission, working closely with the teams who will eventually deliver the steelwork.
You will:
- Review incoming enquiries, drawings, specifications and scopes to understand exactly what is being priced.
- Build detailed estimates covering structural steel quantities, materials, fabrication, labour and installation.
- Price supplier and subcontractor quotations, challenging costs where necessary to arrive at a competitive tender.
- Identify exclusions, assumptions, risks and potential additional costs before the tender goes out.
- Liaise with clients and contractors to clarify requirements and resolve tender queries.
- Work closely with engineering, procurement, project management and commercial teams to make sure the estimate reflects how the project will actually be delivered.
You'll also maintain estimating records and support post-tender reviews, helping the business understand where estimates performed well and where future tenders can be sharpened.
The Candidate
This role is for an Estimator who understands structural steel beyond simply reading a price list.
You will need:
- Proven structural steel estimating experience.
- Experience pricing fabricated and erected steelwork.
- The ability to confidently read and interpret structural drawings.
- A strong understanding of steelwork quantities and fabrication processes.
- Experience taking tenders from initial enquiry through to submission.
- Good commercial awareness and an ability to identify project risks and potential costs.
- Experience dealing with suppliers, subcontractors and clients.
- Strong numerical and organisational skills.
- The ability to manage multiple tenders and deadlines without losing accuracy.
Why Consider It?
- Work within a specialist structural steel environment.
- Take ownership of tenders from enquiry through to submission.
- Price a mixture of materials, fabrication, labour and installation, giving you genuine commercial involvement.
- Work closely with engineering, procurement, project management and commercial teams.
- Play a direct part in helping the business secure profitable structural steel projects.
- A London-based opportunity where your estimating experience will have a visible impact on the projects the business wins.
